Why do we charge private fees?

While we work hard to keep quality imaging services available and affordable to our patients, like other businesses, our running costs continue to grow. This includes the price of staff, rent, electricity, medical products, and technologies. Unlike many other areas of medical practice covered under Medicare, patient rebates for diagnostic imaging services have been largely frozen since 1998. This means that we have only received a very small increase in the rebate paid by Medicare or private health insurance for imaging services since 1998 (roughly 1.7% for some services). Therefore, in order to continue to provide a high-quality medical imaging service to our patients, a private fee is required to cover the costs of providing many of our services.

Outpatient Billing Policy

If you’re an outpatient (not a hospital inpatient), the billing policy will vary depending on the practice you choose to visit. This is because the cost of running each practice varies based on factors such as geography and service offerings. Please ask about the cost of your service at the time of booking.

We bulk bill outpatients who hold a Commonwealth Government issued Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card; however, some services and interventional procedures will attract an out-of-pocket (or Gap) fee. When an out-of-pocket fee is applied, we appreciate payment on the day of the examination.

Please note we do not accept Commonwealth Seniors Health Cards.

Inpatient Billing Policy

If you require services during your stay in the hospital, you will receive a separate account from Epworth Medical Imaging. This is because we are a private and separate entity from the hospital.

Our private fees may be claimable against Medicare and/or your private health insurance; however, an out‐of‐pocket (or Gap) payment may also apply.

We understand that, at times, we will have patients whose financial circumstances limit their ability to meet private fees. This includes those who hold a Commonwealth Government issued Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card. For those eligible patients, we do offer discounted fees on some services. Please note we do not accept Commonwealth Seniors Health Cards.

We strongly recommend that you contact your private health insurer prior to your admittance to the hospital to find out whether your out‐of‐pocket expenses for medical imaging services will be covered.

We perform examinations at the request of your treating doctor. If you are concerned about the need for any examination, we encourage you to discuss this with them.
